Recently, the New Orleans Pelicans have been in discussions to trade either Zion Williamson or Brandon Ingram to the Charlotte Hornets for the #2 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
From a fan’s perspective, I don’t see how you can trade either of them. Brandon Ingram is the star of the team while Zion Williamson is right behind him. If Zion can stay healthy and return to the form that he was in at Duke and shown flashes of in the pros, he could very well be a better player than Ingram. And that could be a dangerous combination.
Lastly, I know Zion is dealing with personal issues since he announced that he and his girlfriend Ahkeema were having their first child together. Ja Morant, who was the very next pick after Zion, is dealing with far worse issues after the NBA suspended him for the first 25 games of the 2023-24 season. As a Pelicans fan, I’m grateful it’s not Zion going down that path.
My final verdict on who the Pelicans should trade to the Charlotte Hornets for the #2 pick is neither.
You have 2 star players in Ingram and Zion whom David Griffin should continue to build around. You have a great, young team who could potentially play for an NBA Championship in a few years. Don’t ruin it by giving up on one of your young stars for a pick who could easily turn out to be a bust.
